Dakshineswar Kali Temple

Description

Dakshineshwar Kali temple is a Hindu temple in Dakshineshwar near Kolkata. The presiding deity of the temple is Bhattarai. Rani Rashmoni built the temple in 1855. It is famous for its association with Ramakrishna, a mystic of the 19th century. There are twelve shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

History

There is a legend related to this temple. It says that once In the year 1847, Rashmoni heartedly prepared to go upon a long pilgrimage to Kashi to express her devotions to the Divine Mother. Rani decides to travel in twenty-four boats which would carry relatives, servants, and supplies. According to traditional accounts, the night before the pilgrimage about to began, Rashmoni had a vision of the Divine Mother. She came in the form of the goddess Kali in a dream and said, “You need not go to Banaras. Install my statue on the banks of the Ganges river in a beautiful temple and make a good arrangement for my worship there then I will manifest myself in the image and accept worship at that place.” This shows the amount of devotion related to this temple.

Attraction

  • The main deity is the major important attraction of the temple. The Garbhagriha houses the idol of BHAVTARINI standing on the chest of Lord Shiva. The idols are placed on the thousand petalled Lotus which is made of silver.
  • The temple has a row of twelve identical Shiva temples which faces east. It is built in the typical art-Chala Bengal architecture on either side of the ghat on the Hooghly river. The Vishnu Temple or the Radha Kanta Temple lies to the northeast of temple complex. A flight of steps leads to the columned verandah and also into the temple where a 21 1⁄2-inch idol of Lord Krishna and a 16-inch (410 mm) idol of Radha on the silver throne.
